ACME is one of my mainstays. Conveniently located near Carr Mill
Mall, ACME has the added convenience of parking just behind the
restaurant. A nice touch is the small dooryard garden at the parking
entrance. ACME is a lunch standard and a popular and busy dinner
spot, often filling up by seven. They don't take reservations.
The ACME menu is American Eclectic, with a variety of ethnic
influences, specializing in what they call comfort foods. Prices are
moderate, with entrees ranging from $8 to $15. I particularly like
the choice of full or half portions for many of the entrees. You can
select a wine from a small but well-balanced list, with some
excellent choices available by the glass.
On our last visit, I enjoyed a chilled sautéed tiger shrimp
salad with garlic, fresh orange juice, red peppers, peas and
scallions over radicchio as a first course. My entrée was fried
North Carolina soft-shelled crab with pesto and sautéed tomato on
linguini. I had the half portion to save room for the tunnel of
chocolate with whipped cream. My husband Forrest had a fresh fennel
salad with chilled roasted potato, red onions and blue cheese. He
followed that with chicken Marsala with mushrooms, shallots, and
sautéed collard greens. He only had room for a bite or two of my
dessert.
Like most restaurants in the Chapel Hill Area, dress at ACME is
casual. You will see people of all ages from "mature"
folks like Forrest and me to young families with small children. One
of the special things about ACME is the service people. They are
young, many UNC students, and eager to make your dining experience a
pleasing one.
I'm sure that I will see you sometime soon at the ACME Food and
Beverage Company enjoying a relaxed and delicious meal.
