The Fearrington Garden Club promotes a greater interest in gardening, stimulates interest in conservation of wild flowers, trees and birds and increases concern for the protection of the environment. We meet every third Tuesday, from 3 to 5:00 p.m. (September-May).

Results of the member survey conducted by President Bierhoff:

36% of membership responded to questionnaire
32 of the 33 people responding said they would be members again this year.
82% said they like to visit other people's gardens
79% said they're hands on gardeners
15% grow mainly house plants.
27% join mainly for the social activity
91% participate to learn more about plants and gardening
88% are interested in lectures by gardening experts
70% are interested in trips to interesting gardens
15% would be interested in volunteer work for the community
55% enjoy gardentours in Fearrington Village
30% enjoy luncheons and dinners

Calendar of Events for 2008 -2009

Please note that in response to a members’ survey the regular meeting time for the Club has been changed from evenings to afternoons. Meetings will be at The Gathering Place with doors open at 3:00 and program beginning at 3:15. Meetings will be adjourned by 5:00 PM.

Transportation for the proposed field trips will be arranged through various club members. 

Tuesday, September 16, 3:00 PM 
Program: Welcome new and returning members and “Soil Amelioration in Fearrington” with Al Cooke, Chatham County Cooperative Extension Agent and Jeanne Riddle, PhD, Fearrington gardener. A tour of Jeanne’s garden exhibiting examples of soil amelioration will follow the presentations.

Tuesday, October 21, 3:00 PM 
Program: “Bulbs, Rocks and Terraces in Garden Design, Recent Examples of Work” with Kim Powell, Landscape Architect and Professor Emeritus, NCSU. A tour of some of Kim’s work in Fearrington will be available following his presentation.

Tuesday, November 18, 3:00 PM 
Program: Holiday wine and cheese social and “Mail Order Resources” with Ruth Bierhoff, Fearrington Garden Club President for 2008-2009

Tuesday, January 20. 3:00 PM 
Program: “Not Under the Tuscan Sun: How to Grow Mediterranean Plants in the Piedmont” with Frank Hyman of Cottage Garden Landscaping, garden design/builder and writer in the N&O, Herald-Sun, Independent and Carolina Gardener.

Tuesday, February 17
Program: Presentation by Jeff Baldwin of Orchids by Hank Chapel Greenhouses demonstrating how to grow, transplant and care for orchids

Friday, February 27, time TBD anytime between 8:00 AM & 5:00 PM
Visit to Plants Delight Nursery in Raleigh featuring Winter Open House with “spectacular displays of flowering hellebores and other winter flower plants” with proprietor Tony Avent available to answer questions

Tuesday, March 17, 3:00 PM
Program: “Wildflowers of the American Southeast” with Bobby Ward, PhD, native North Carolinian, lecturer and author of many books including “A Contemplation Upon Flowers: Garden Plants in Myth and Literature” and “the Plant Hunter’s Garden: the New Explorers and their Discoveries”

Tour of the estate gardens of Montrose in Hillsborough with Nancy Goodwin, author of “Montrose, Life in a Garden”

Tuesday, April 21, 3:00 PM
Visit to Central Chatham High School Horticultural Department to visit with the opportunity to buy plants at the greenhouse run by students under direction of their teacher, Julian Smith.
