| THE FEARRINGTON GARDEN CLUB GENERAL MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 The initial fall 2006 meeting of the Fearrington Garden Club took place Tuesday, September 19, at the Gathering Place. In his opening remarks Co-President Orv Conner extended a warm welcome to those attending (50 persons). He acknowledged with gratitude the work of past President John Karvazy and past Treasurer Mary Granger. He noted those who have accepted a second term on the Board – Marlene Conner serving as Co- President; Janet Dopler and LaVerne Troutman, Membership Co-chairs; Ruth Keimig, CLIPPINGS editor; and Frances DeHart, Secretary. Forrest Greenslade has agreed to maintain the Garden Club Website again. New Club officers Vice-President/Program Chairman Gresham Yeager and Treasurer David Alter were introduced; as were the 2007 Garden Tour Co-ordinators Mimi Woehrel and Dianne Birch; and Hospitality Chair Nancy Marrow with her committee Betsy Mebane and Barbara Snotherly. Nancy Marrow circulated a sign-up sheet for those who would volunteer for the refreshment and centerpiece donations in the months ahead. Orv Conner spoke of some activities and requirements for the Club’s program this year. He made a plea for a volunteer or two who would co-ordinate an occasional “special event” trip, an opportunity to visit a garden or gardening-related site as a group. He announced that the “Swap Table” will be available in the Club meeting room again for those who have potted specimens to share. In the Save-the-Date department, April 28-29, 2007 has been designated Fearrington Garden Club Tour weekend. Lastly, Orv mentioned that Club members will be encouraged to make some program recommendations for the future, based on their particular interests. Gresham Yeager then introduced the program presenter for the evening – Al Cooke, who is well-known in the area as Chatham County’s Extension Agent. As such, his responsibilities are wide-ranging as horticultural expert and educator. Speaking on the premise “PRUNING: First you ask WHY, then you know the WHEN and HOW,” his lecture was illustrated with slide visuals and re-inforced with instructive leaflets for his audience. A useful question and answer session followed. During the social time the Hospitality Committee served wine and other beverage with cheese and crackers. Respectfully submitted, Frances DeHart, Secretary |
