North
Carolina's Triangle Area: A Powerful Economic Engine
It
is great to be at home in Chapel Hill for many reasons -- one
important reason is our exciting economic engine. Economic
opportunities abound within the triangular area defined by
Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh, known as "The
Triangle".
Since the 1950's three major universities have primed
economic development in this exciting area. The University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke
University in Durham, and NC
State University in Raleigh have provided intellectual,
human and financial resources that drive economic life
throughout the area.
In
1959,with the leadership of the academic and
governmental communities, the Research Triangle Foundation and
the Research Triangle Park were founded. Now, this is a
6,900-acre Research and Development giant that provides jobs,
new products and tomorrow's opportunities for the region, the
country and the world. Profiles of the many companies that
make up RTP can be obtained at http://www.rtp. New businesses are hatching every day here in the triangle,
and the entrepreneurial mind-set is a common way of thought
around here. The Council for
Entrepreneurial Development supports new enterprises with
education, capitol formation, mentoring and networking, and
communication of business development opportunities. The North
Carolina Technology Development Authority creates jobs by
nurturing, supporting and helping entrepreneurs. In addition
to its "First Flight Center" -- business incubator
in RTP-- 26 additional incubators are located around North
Carolina. More local economic information is also available
online: right now you're just one click away from economic
development advice for Orange
County (where Chapel Hill is located), and Durham
County.
New ideas are the fuel of economic machines, and the
Triangle Area has more than its share of idea generators. In
addition to the major universities and several high-quality
smaller educational institutions, a number of organizations
foster technological and intellectual innovation. For example,
Research Triangle Institute
is a major Research and Development assistance agency that
advances knowledge in health and medicine, environmental
protection, advanced technologies, and public policy. The Microelectronic
Center of North Carolina helps to launch new high-tech
companies. The North
Carolina Biotechnology Center nurtures the state's growing
biotech community.
This is just the "tip of the triangle" because
every community in the Triangle Area has exciting businesses
starting, growing and evolving. Check the following Chambers
